WVCHIP Grants

In 2004, WVCHIP began working with several state agencies and community health programs as a way to refocus WVCHIP's outreach efforts as a leader in health prevention and promoting healthy lifestyle issues such as obesity, lack of immunizations, juvenile diabetes, asthma and other health problems are on the rise; early detection and prevention is imperative.  WVCHIP's decision to make health intervention a priority in its outreach efforts supports our state's Healthy People 2010 objectives outlined for children.  Currently, WVCHIP is focusing on educating families on the importance of well-child visits, immunizations, reducing unnecessary emergency room visits, child development and diabetes case management.  If you or your organization would like to submit a grant application for WVCHIP's health intervention and preventive initiative, please complete the application and mail to the following address:

CHIPPY (the WVCHIP Mascot)

The WVCHIP mascot was created to bring more awareness to the CHIP program. CHIPPY acts as the ambassador for WVCHIP at community events throughout West Virginia. Kids love him and enjoy spending time interacting with him at a CHIP exhibit. CHIPPY has traveled many places in the State and even went to Boston in 2003 for a National Health Law Program meeting. Currently, CHIPPY is only being used by the Family Resource Network Association and the Starting Point Centers of West Virginia.

Volunteers

WVCHIP is always looking for volunteers to help promote WVCHIP through out the State. High school students may be able to use their volunteer service towards community service hours for class credit (please see your High School Community Service Coordinator/Teacher). If you would like to volunteer for WVCHIP, please complete the volunteer form (p.d.f) and return to the WVCHIP office.

Scheduling WVCHIP for Your Event, Business, School or Place of Worship

WVCHIP welcomes opportunities to visit communities in West Virginia to educate families about low-cost health insurance and health prevention. Representatives from the WVCHIP office or Volunteers Speakers Bureau are available to speak. If you would like a WVCHIP representative to speak to families at your business, school or place of worship, please complete the form (p.d.f) and return to the WVCHIP office.

Faith-based Outreach

Religious congregations provide an established network that reaches deep into the community. Religious organizations also have a moral viewpoint to embrace important issues that affect children and families. If your place of worship would like to promote WVCHIP, please request a WVCHIP outreach training workshop (p.d.f) to learn how to implement outreach in your congregation and/or community. WVCHIP has developed two great tools, such as the faith-based resource guide (p.d.f) and the program outreach manual (p.d.f) to help faith communities combine efforts with WVCHIP in spreading the word to thousands of families about low-cost health care coverage.

Business Outreach

Today, more business owners are not able to provide affordable full medical coverage to their employees. Employers have the perfect opportunity to promote WVCHIP to their employees and customers through payroll stuffers, websites, bulletin boards and more. Learn how your business can benefit children by developing a partnership with WVCHIP in our Working with Businesses Factsheet (p.d.f) or you can start promoting WVCHIP today by completing the business outreach order form (p.d.f). The WVCHIP Volunteer Speakers Bureau is also available to speak to employees at a staff meeting or lay-off meeting.

School-based Outreach

There is no better place to start reaching families than in your local school system. Educators and parent teacher associations know better than anyone that a healthy start in life is essential for getting children ready to learn. WVCHIP can help children reach their potential inside as well as outside the classroom. Learn how you can promote WVCHIP in your school by reading Outreach Options for Schools (p.d.f) or schedule an outreach workshop (p.d.f) for school personnel. You may also start your outreach effort by just completing the school-based outreach order form (p.d.f).

Provider Outreach

Each day doctors, dentists, optometrists and pharmacists see families that are without health care. Providers can help promote WVCHIP by having materials available in their waiting area and counseling patients about insurance opportunities during an office visit. Ask your doctor to help promote WVCHIP by giving them a copy of the provider outreach order form (p.d.f) and the Working with Providers Factsheet (p.d.f).
